Ingredients

  • pinch sugar
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • ½ cup honey
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 3 eggs (divided)
  • 5 ¾ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra)
  • 2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 sticks softened butter
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • zest of 1 orange

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix warm water and sugar; sprinkle yeast on top. Let stand until frothy (5–10 minutes).
  2. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, honey, melted butter, and two eggs; mix well.
  3. In another bowl, whisk flour, cardamom, and salt together. Gradually add to wet ingredients while stirring.
  4. Knead dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth; place in greased bowl to rise until doubled (about an hour).
  5. Punch down the risen dough; divide into two loaves and shape. Place in greased loaf pans.
  6. Cover loaves and let rise again until doubled (30–45 minutes).
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake loaves for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
  8. For honey orange butter, mix softened butter with honey and orange zest until creamy.
  9. Serve sliced warm bread with honey orange butter.
